How to Read an NDC Number — and Why Your Wholesaler Keeps Asking for It

Three segments, one product
A National Drug Code identifies one specific product from one labeler in one package. It has three segments: the labeler code (assigned by FDA to the manufacturer, repackager or distributor), the product code (the specific drug, strength and dosage form) and the package code (the package size and type). 0093-1048-01, for example, points to one labeler, one formulation and one bottle size — not just 'a 500 mg tablet.'
10 digits vs 11 digits
FDA assigns NDCs in 10 digits, in one of three patterns: 4-4-2, 5-3-2 or 5-4-1. Billing systems and most pharmacy software use an 11-digit 5-4-2 format, created by adding a leading zero to whichever segment is short. That is why the NDC on the bottle and the NDC in your claim can look different while meaning the same product — and why a wholesaler's search should accept either form, with or without hyphens.
Why one generic has dozens of NDCs
Metformin 500 mg tablets exist under many NDCs because each labeler, each pack size (100-count, 500-count, 1000-count) and each formulation (immediate release vs extended release) gets its own code. When a wholesaler shows you a 'metformin' price, the only thing that makes it comparable to your primary's price is the NDC: same labeler, same count, same product.
Ordering by NDC saves you money and mistakes
Searching a wholesaler by NDC gives you the exact match to the product already on your shelf — same manufacturer, same tablet appearance, no patient calls about pills that look different. Searching by name shows you every alternative, which is what you want in a shortage or when you're shopping for the lowest cost per unit. Use both: NDC to replace, name to compare.
What a good wholesale search does with an NDC
It should match partial NDCs, ignore hyphens and leading zeros, show the labeler and pack size on every result, and show the lot's expiration date before you add to cart.
